ABOUT US

Our firm

How it all began

It dates back to the prestigious law firm known in 1923 as Garfield & Rhoades in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The firm’s subsidiary office in Mexico City was led by attorney Maurice Minchen with the help and companionship of his best friend, Gaspar Zavala de León, who, after building his career as a litigation attorney, contributed significantly to fulfilling the aspirations of those affected by the Mexican Revolution, helping them recover from the damages caused by this pivotal historical event in Mexico.

Since Gaspar Zavala de León (born in Sombrerete Zac., Mexico) began his fraternal partnership with his best friend and American attorney Maurice Minchen (born in Texas, USA), after sharing their professional studies at the Old School of Jurisprudence, both foresaw the importance and potential of the field of Intellectual Property. They became pioneers and innovators in this important area of law, which was scarcely explored in Mexico at the time.

Lic. Zavala de León was an expert litigator, having developed his professional practice from the courtroom as an advocate to the bench as a single-instance judge. Meanwhile, attorney Minchen demonstrated his knowledge of both Mexican and American law, applying his innate business acumen to attract clients and build a significant portfolio of trademarks and patents. This portfolio arose from their dedication and was recognized by the U.S. Embassy and numerous American companies.

After the passing of attorney Maurice Minchen, his lifelong friend Gaspar Zavala de León remained loyal to the tradition of dedication and service through the practice of law, initiating a new partnership with another American attorney, Mr. Raúl Berry. Together, they led a successful firm called Berry & Zavala for over two decades until Mr. Berry’s retirement in the late 1980s. Thus, Mr. Zavala de León continued his legal practice, which was later taken up in the field of Intellectual Property by the eldest of his seven children, attorney Gaspar Zavala Maldonado. Through hard work, dedication, and integrity, he upheld the legacy of vocation and service inherited from his father for another 40 years, managing and directing the portfolio, and is today the senior founding partner of Zavala Patmark, S.C., a firm established to carry on a noble tradition. The firm is dedicated to remaining a law practice in constant progress, made up of well-integrated members who are always committed to vocation, order, honesty, loyalty, and justice, so that these values are recognized solely through their daily actions, ultimately resulting in fully satisfied clients.

Still active as a consulting partner at Zavala Patmark, S.C., Gaspar Zavala Maldonado has handed over the leadership to his sons Gaspar and Carlos Manuel, who have been working together for over two decades, alongside their team, where the loyalty and tenure of its members remain the distinctive hallmark of the firm.
